Seven modules take you from a vague interest to a researchable question: scope the topic, map the literature, test the topic's feasibility, craft the research question, choose a method that fits, build an alignment map your committee can follow, and evaluate the whole topic through the 4 Us.

Why topic selection is the hardest chapter

Most dissertation delays start here. A topic that is too broad, too personal, or too thinly grounded in the literature cannot be rescued by better writing later. The committee's first question is always the same: what does this study add to what we already know? This studio trains you to answer that question before you write the proposal.

Turn a broad interest into a focused, researchable inquiry. Learn how to scope a topic, name the central construct, and move from 'I want to study…' to a question the literature can actually answer.

Build a synthesis matrix from recent sources and let the gap emerge from the conversation. Distinguish real gaps — contradiction, under-tested design, missing mechanism — from local-site novelty.
